Fugitive From Justice

Larry Porter Chism, born December 19, 1948, is one of the longest-running fugitives on the U.S. Marshals Service’s 15 Most Wanted list. Once a promising law student, Chism turned to crime in the early 1970s and was serving combined state and federal sentences totaling 70 years for armed robbery, narcotics trafficking, kidnapping, and hijacking an airplane when he escaped from the Lonoke County Jail in Arkansas in December 1978. During a previous escape attempt, he shot and seriously wounded a corrections officer. Considered armed and dangerous, Chism has remained at large since that time. Over the decades, Chism has used multiple aliases—including Kenneth Brookins and Jack Coffman—to conceal his identity, and investigators believe he may still be living under an assumed name in the southeastern United States. His escape and evasion tactics, intelligence, and familiarity with false document creation have made him exceptionally difficult to track. The U.S. Marshals continue to offer a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to his capture or confirmation of his death.
