NCOUC - Group 3

Missing or Unidentified Person

On August 27, 2002, construction workers in Richmond, Virginia's Southside Manchester neighborhood (near the intersection of 12th and Maury streets) discovered the mummified remains of an unidentified Black man concealed beneath bushes and under a pile of bricks in a shallow ravine adjacent to the Riverside Brick & Supply Company. The body had been there long enough to become mummified, complicating efforts to determine the exact circumstances of death or the time since death, though investigators believe he had been deceased for an extended period prior to discovery. The decedent was an adult male estimated to be between 50 and 70 years old (with some earlier assessments ranging from 45 to 67), and his height was approximated at 5'2" to 5'7". A pair of size 10 slip-on shoes were recovered at the scene. Dental X-rays were obtained and are available for comparison. As of recent updates, the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has pursued investigative genetic genealogy testing (with samples sent to a private lab in recent years) to help identify him. No presumed identity, fingerprints, or definitive cause of death has been established.
