Missing or Unidentified Person

On June 24, 1996, a black newborn infant girl was found on a conveyor belt at the Southeastern Public Service Authority refuse and recycling plant in Portsmouth, Virginia. An autopsy showed the baby had been alive at birth and suffered severe traumatic injuries before her death. The infant was 1 foot 6 inches to 1 foot 10 inches (18 to 22 inches, estimated), weighed 6 to 7 pounds, and was believed to have been born approximately 12 hours before being found. She was buried in March 1995. The Portsmouth police have investigated her death as a homicide. In January 2025, the body was exhumed in hopes of find viable DNA for extraction to aid in identification. She has been known as Baby June 1996 and also by the name Portsmouth Jane Doe (1996).
