Missing or Unidentified Person

On December 27, 1995, an unidentified Black/African American adult male, estimated to be 22 to 46 years old and 5 foot 5 inches to 5 foot 9 inches tall with black hair, died in a high-speed single-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 near a bridge in Alberta, Brunswick County, Virginia, approximately 6 miles south of the town. The stolen vehicle, taken from Durham, North Carolina, the previous day (December 26), was traveling over 100 mph when witnesses saw it run off the road, strike a guardrail, flip, and catch fire around 1:40 a.m. The victim was trapped inside, resulting in severely charred skeletal remains; all body parts were recovered at the scene, with an estimated post-mortem interval of about 10 minutes before death from the injuries and fire. He had a distinctive old, healed trauma to his left clavicle, suggesting a prior shoulder injury such as a break, displacement, or separation. A metallic link bracelet or watch band was found on his right wrist, but the fire destroyed most clothing and footwear details. Notably, a class ring inscribed "Shaw High School, 1938" was recovered near the driver's position, the age estimate for the decedent makes direct graduation unlikely.
