Agency:NCOUC - Group 3
Case Type:Missing or Unidentified Person
Case Details:In the spring, April 3, 2010, a Warrenton man and his daughter discovered a human skull while hunting in the George Washington National Forest, near the boundary between Shenandoah and Warren counties, Virginia. Authorities were promptly notified, and upon arrival, law enforcement conducted an extensive perimeter search of the area. Despite thorough efforts and the deployment of cadaver dogs, no additional human remains were recovered—a circumstance Sheriff Proctor noted as unusual. The skull was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office, where examination revealed no evidence of trauma. Forensic anthropological analysis determined the skull likely belonged to a white male of European descent, approximately 30 to 45 years old. The individual had a well-healed fracture on the right side of the cranium and evidence of prior dental work, including fillings. The condition of the remains suggested the man had been deceased for no less than nine months but no more than five years prior to discovery.
