Logan Brent Warrior-Goings, age 6, was fatally shot on the evening of May 5, 2022, at a family residence in the Payabya Community (also referred to locally as "#4 Community"), near Oglala, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, approximately eight miles north of the town of Pine Ridge.
According to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Dakota, one or more unidentified individuals fired approximately 14 rounds into the occupied home from outside; Logan was struck while sitting on a couch inside the residence and died at the scene. Family members were present in the home at the time. Logan was born October 2, 2015, in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and was living with extended family at the Payabya Community residence at the time of his death.
The case is being investigated by the FBI's Minneapolis Field Office in partnership with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. No suspect has been publicly identified, arrested, or charged. In June 2026, the FBI announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible, alongside "Operation Ballistic Backlog," a joint initiative of the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Oglala Sioux Tribe, and the U.S. Attorney's Office to test approximately 500 previously unexamined firearms held in tribal police evidence through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN).
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, NIBIN testing has linked a firearm recovered elsewhere in South Dakota to the shooting that killed Logan; no arrest has resulted from that finding as of this writing.
