Seth Allen Uptain, then 32, of Mills, Wyoming, was last seen in Casper, Wyoming, on the morning of April 4, 2010 — Easter Sunday. Uptain was attending a church service at Salt & Light in Casper with his family when he left partway through the service to get coffee and did not return. He left behind his wallet, identification, eyeglasses, and other personal belongings. He was last seen wearing a black wool overcoat, a light-colored button-down shirt, a sweater vest, brown dress pants, and brown dress shoes. Uptain's mother reported him missing after he failed to return home or make contact. She later told investigators he had seemed depressed and agitated that day and had been experiencing financial difficulties for roughly two years before his disappearance, including unemployment and the loss of electricity and running water at his residence. She said he had mentioned the possibility of relocating to Denver, Colorado, or to Oregon for work, and that she was uncertain whether he may have been avoiding a pending legal matter.
The Mills Police Department is the lead investigating agency; Detective Kate Acord has handled the case in recent years. Wyoming's Division of Criminal Investigation has also been involved in publicizing the case. Public court records show Uptain failed to appear on a misdemeanor charge in Natrona County Circuit Court on December 31, 2009, resulting in a bench warrant; no such warrant remains active. Searches of the National Crime Information Center and other databases, along with dental records and DNA submitted to national systems, have not produced a match to any known remains in the United States or Canada. A former college roommate has stated he believes he had lunch with Uptain in Greenville, South Carolina, sometime after Uptain was reported missing, though this account has not been independently confirmed by law enforcement and is not treated as a verified sighting.
