NCOUC - Group 3

Missing or Unidentified Person

On May 4, 2005, a biology student in Virginia turned over a human pelvic bone to his professor, who promptly contacted the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in Leesburg, Virginia. The student reported that he and fellow biology classmates had discovered the bone during an excavation or "dig" in either Berkeley Township or Bass River Township, both located in Ocean County, New Jersey, regions characterized by pine barrens and forested areas. Due to challenges in repatriating the remains to New Jersey authorities, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office submitted the bone to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification for forensic anthropological examination and DNA analysis. Forensic analysis determined that the pelvis belonged to a female of undetermined race or ethnicity. Her age at death was estimated to be at least 9 years old, with a broad upper range extending potentially to 99 years. The time since death could not be precisely established but was believed to range from several years prior to the discovery up to sometime in or before 2005. No additional skeletal elements, clothing, personal effects, or identifiers were recovered or associated with the case. As a result, details such as stature, weight, hair color, and eye color remain unknown, leaving this unidentified female's case open and reliant on further anthropological study, DNA profiling, or potential matches for resolution.
