Missing or Unidentified Person

On October 31, 1990, hikers discovered the skeletal remains of an unidentified adult white male in a wooded area near Amelia Courthouse in Amelia County, Virginia. The decedent, known as Amelia County John Doe (NamUs #UP6548), was estimated to be between 42 and 59 years old (with some sources noting a range of 30-45) and stood approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall. Notable skeletal features included evidence of healed trauma to the right shoulder with a bony spur on the scapula, as well as a large unilateral frontal sinus. The cause and manner of death remain undetermined, with the postmortem interval estimated at several months to a couple of years prior to discovery. Clothing and personal items recovered with the remains consisted of frayed red material, green material with an elastic waistband and pocket, right and left military-type boots, and a rusted bracelet. Additional items found included a purple cigarette lighter, cigarette butts along with a plastic cigarette pack wrapper and aluminum foil, a blue comb, pennies dated no later than 1987, two bolts, a lead weight, and aviator-type sunglasses.
