Missing or Unidentified Person
On January 16, 2001, partial skeletal remains of an unidentified woman were discovered in a wooded area near Smithfield in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Forensic analysis determined that the decedent was an adult female, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old (under 40), with an uncertain racial or ethnic background, though she may have been white/Caucasian, Black/African American, or possibly of mixed ancestry. The remains exhibited significant decomposition consistent with a postmortem interval of at least five years, and potentially up to about ten years, indicating she likely died sometime in the early to mid-1990s.
